The MLB season is coming up this year and many people are making their predictions of who is going to go the farthest this year.  My favorite team is the New York Yankees and I think that they’re going to be the one’s that make it to the playoffs and then win the World Series.  According to “bleacherreport.com” the Yankees only have to players injured coming into the 2020 season and that is one of their pitchers Luis Severino and James Paxton.  Other than those two starting pitchers being injured there aren’t any other injured players on there roster.  The Yankees have an overall record of 101-61 according to “bleacherreport.com”.  I think that Yankees have always been a good team even though they haven’t won a championship since the year 2009.  The New York Yankees have an incredible team and have a few new rookies coming onto their team within the 2020 season.  I believe the Yankees will win this upcoming year because they haven’t won in the last eleven years and before that their last world series win was in 1996 which is a thirteen-year gap.  My prediction is that they’re going to win again soon, and I believe that it’ll be this year.  According to “Rotochamp.com” the Yankees are having nine starters and none of them are rookies.  In my opinion, that Yankees have never been a bad team, and I think after seeing all of the players they will at least be in the playoffs this year.  The New York Yankees record last year was 103-59.  That is a very good streak to win about 50% of their games that they play.  The Yankees will always be my favorite team even if they don’t end up winning this year.

The NCAA Big Ten Basketball tournament has been around for a long time.  This tournament is a college basketball tournament that host the top fourteen teams.  This is a tournament in which teams compete against each other trying to move on to eventually win the whole thing.  The winner of this tournament gets a huge trophy and gets a banner held up in their home stadium recognizing there win and the year that they won.  There are other types of tournaments that go on within the U.S. and college basketball, but this tournament is within the Midwest.  When this tournament happens, it is always during the college basketball season and goes on after the regular season starts.  Usually in mid-March.  To enter this tournament, you have to have a certain record to even be eligible to participate.  If you’re record is not good enough you will not be able to participate, and you’ll have to try again next year.  The Tournament itself is always held at a different stadium each year and is sometimes held at professional basketball stadiums, such as Bakers life field house, which is home of the Indiana Pacers.  It is a huge accomplishment to win a tournament like this because millions of people around the world watch these games, especially the final game, and being able to win shows you’re the best team in college basketball and a lot of people bet on these games with rosters.  The Tournament last year was won by the University of Virginia against Texas Tech and Virginia was able to pull of the win.  This tournament is huge around the would and tons of people attend these games to see who can pull it off, so being able to see these games is a true and awesome experience.

USI Basketball

The USI men basketball team had there first basketball game in 1970-1971.  There overall record of all time is 952-443.  Which is very good, meaning they win over half their games.  The USI men’s basketball head coach is Rodney Watson and Assistant coach Brent Owens.  The USI men’s basketball team plays their games in the USI Screaming Eagles Arena located on the USI campus.  The USI basketball teams record for this season is 19-5 and has a five-game winning streak.  There record for home is 12-2 and away is 6-3.  The USI men’s basketball team has only had one tied game over there season and it counted for towards there record.  The USI men’s basketball team has a total of seventeen players on there team and all of them are either forwards/guards and simply guards.  The USI basketball team’s winning percentage overall is a .792 and for the season its .688, which is good.  The basketball team has a total of thirty games this season and they have played all of them except four of them.  This does not include the GLVC tournament that comes after the regular season.  The GLVC tournament’s first game is March 5^th against Great Lakes valley Conference and then after that is the 2020 NCAA II Midwest Regional, which begins March 11^th.  This is assuming the USI men win in the first tournament then they move on the NCAA II Elite Eight.  If they win that one, then they get to compete in the NCAA II National Championship Game to have a chance to win it all and they would go up against the other team that also wins those tournaments.  The National Championship game will be held in Atlanta Georgia at the State Farm Arena.  The USI team has a good chance to win it all and is a favorite in the picks to win.

The Super Bowl was held on February 2^nd, 2020.  The two NFL teams that played were the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers.  The kickoff started at 6:30 ET in Miami Gardens, Florida where the Miami Dolphins play their games in the regular season.  This is the 6^th time the Super Bowl has been played at this stadium.  During the Super Bowl there was a half time show that hosted Jennifer Lopez and Shakira to sing and put on a show for the fans.  This was the 54^th Super Bowl of all-time and had just over 62,000 people in attendance.  According to “sun-sentinel.com” a total of 102 million people tuned in to the Super Bowl worldwide.  The 49ers ended up losing to the Kansas City Chiefs with a score of 31-20.  The Chiefs haven’t won a Super Bowl in 50 years, and the last time the Kansas City Chiefs won a Super Bowl was January 11^th, 1970 against the Minnesota Vikings.  The 2020 Super Bowl is the first time the Chiefs and the 49ers have met with each other in the Super Bowl.  This Super Bowl is the 49ers seventh appearance in the Super Bowl, and if they had won this Super Bowl, they would have tied the New England Patriots and the Pittsburg Steelers for the most Super Bowl victories in NFL history.  The average price of a ticket for this year’s Super Bowl was $7,000.  This was for a upper deck seat and nothing to special.  The starting ticket prices for the bad seats was $4,220.  The 49ers head coach Kyle Shannahan had his Super Bowl debut this year.  Lastly, the average price for a thirty second commercial on Super Bowl day costs around 5.6 million dollars.

Sports Blog analysis

The sports blog the I read about is called “Nonprofit, Business join forces to bring back the snow sport alliance program”.  This article is about snow sports are not being utilized enough and attention.  A lot of little kids don’t know how to ski and snowboard.  This article explains that youth kids that cannot afford to go skiing/snowboarding, which there is an event that is hosted where ten youth kids get to participate in this event where for ten days these youth kids are taught and instructed on how to ski and snowboard.  This gives the opportunity to teach youth kids on how to do something they haven’t done before and it helps skiing and snowboarding become more popular.  This article also discusses how these youth kids are progressing a ton.  Ahmad, the main instructor of this event says “I’m seeing them whizzing by me and that’s just great that they started not even knowing how to put on skies to now progressing so much”  This article speaks a lot about how this camp/event had some donations come in from other businesses to help the afford to keep the event up for the full ten days and also to help this ski foundation stay up in business and be able to do this more often.  The last little bit of the article discusses how not all these kids are from America.  Some of these kids are from Mexico and come to learn for the first time how to snow or ski and have the kid’s parents check in and see how their kids are doing.  For example, one of the kids is named Regina Ahumada and she is from Chihuahua Mexico and came down to learn how to snowboard.

March Madness is a tournament is college basketball that has Seven different rounds.  The first round consists of all the teams within the tournament to compete and the winner moves on to the next round.  This tournament is for both men’s and women’s basketball at the division 1 level.  To be allowed into this tournament these teams either must win their divisional conference or be chosen by the NCAA basketball selection committee.  There is a total of 64 teams for the women’s and 68 teams for the men.  This tournament is done in March (Hence the title March Madness).  These teams then go on to compete against each other trying to move on.  This tournament has to do with seeding which means the Selection committee sets games up according to division 1 basketball teams so that the better teams don’t automatically get to face off a team that is a lot worse than them.  The selection committee puts teams that have equal records against each other matching the games up as fair as possible until this tournament reaches the final eight teams.  Once this happens than the teams keep competing until there are 4 teams, then the final two teams which the final game is always held somewhere in a nice stadium other than each other’s teams home courts.  The winner of this tournament than gets a huge trophy and is named the best basketball college team for that year.  The winning team also gets a banner put up in there home stadium letting the fans know what year they won there championship and to be able to look back on all the championships each team has won depending on what college basketball fan you are.

            From what I hear, the Evansville Thunderbolts are an ice hockey team for the University of Evansville.  I am unsure if they are a regular college team or maybe even semi-pro, but they compete from Evansville and play other ice hockey teams within the area.  From what I have found information wise, they usually play at the Ford center in Evansville, IN.  I think that they are a pretty bad ice hockey team because not a lot of colleges in the area have their own ice hockey team.  Some simple facts that I found on their team is that they are indeed not very good.  During their last three seasons from 2016-2017 they won 14 games and lost 32 games…during the last season from 2018-2019 they won 12 games and lost 38!  I’m not sure why they aren’t very good and haven’t won more games, but I think the potential for them to win more is there they must be facing teams that are much more experienced.  My opinion about the thunderbolts is that they are facing teams that are from much colder area’s and so there main sport is ice hockey as ours would be football or basketball and so the Evansville ice hockey team is facing those teams and that is probably why they aren’t winning as much.  When I first saw that we were doing this paper on the Evansville Thunderbolts, I thought that the Thunderbolts were a track team or something…I had never heard of this ice hockey team before today.  I think that the Evansville ice hockey team should stay in place, but rather try and make them better, meaning higher a new coach and try to recruit players that have a high talent for the game so that they are able to win 38 games and lose 14 rather than the other way around.

The NHL All-Star weekend took place on January 25^th, 2020.  This All-Star weekend took place at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri.  This NHL weekend had many different events that were included and those were, NHL skills Competition, then an elite women’s 3 vs 3.  Afterwards, came the game between the American All-Stars vs the Canadian All-Stars.  Followed by three other games which was the Atlantic division vs the Metropolitan division, the Central Division vs the Pacific division, and then the Atlantic vs Pacific for the Final.  Atlantic won the first game, Pacific won the second and final game.  The Saint Louis Blue’s have hosted the NHL All-Star weekend for the third consecutive year, but first time with a 3v3 women’s hockey tournament, according to “nhl.com”.  Also, according to “nhl.com” the first NHL All-Star game was held in 1947.  This NHL All-Star weekend this year was the first ever time having an NHL skills challenge that included the “fastest skater”, the “save streak”, and “accuracy streak”.  Within the NHL All-Star weekend, the pacific beat the Atlantic 5-4 and David Pastrnak of the Boston Bruins was name the most valuable player.  As may know the NHL All-Star weekend takes the biggest star players from each division making up four All-Star teams.  Each game consists of twenty minutes.  To become a All-Star for this weekend you must be voted on by the fans.  The winner of the All-Star weekend game takes the whole prize of one million dollars.  Lastly, the NHL All-Star weekend goes from January 25^th through January 28^th and as the NHL deputy commissioner says, “The NHL All-Star weekend provides a unique opportunity for our fans, players, clubs, and business partners to come together in one city to celebrate the game at its highest level”.
